South Korea’s Night of Resistance: Protesters Clash with Police over Martial Law

In an unexpected turn of events, South Korea was thrust into political turmoil when President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law late on December 3, 2024. This declaration came amidst growing tensions between the president’s administration and the opposition-controlled parliament, which had been at odds over budget negotiations and corruption allegations against high-ranking officials, including Yoon’s own family.

The announcement of martial law sent shockwaves through the nation, evoking memories of South Korea’s authoritarian past. Almost immediately, citizens from various walks of life converged on the National Assembly in Seoul, where they encountered a formidable presence of police and military personnel. The police, in an effort to enforce the martial law decree, barricaded the entrance to the assembly, preventing lawmakers and the public from entering.
