By utilizing flexible ‘threads,’ the risk of brain damage is significantly reduced compared to conventional brain-machine interfaces. These threads are remarkably thin, measuring less than the width of a human hair.

The use of threads also opens up exciting possibilities for transferring larger amounts of data. According to the white paper by Elon Musk & Neuralink, their proposed system could incorporate an impressive “3,072 electrodes per array distributed across 96 threads.”
