FBI Misused Foreign Spy Database To Target Jan. 6 Suspects And BLM Protesters

The FBI has misused a digital surveillance tool known as Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) over 278,000 times, including against Jan. 6 riot suspects, crime victims, and individuals arrested during protests after George Floyd’s killing. These abuses, revealed in a recently unsealed court document, resulted from a misunderstanding between FBI employees and Justice Department lawyers. Although the FBI claims to have resolved the issues, this misconduct may hinder efforts to renew the expiring law and invites criticism from former President Trump and his supporters. The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court has pressured the FBI to rectify the problems or face potential changes to its practices. The Section 702 database, viewed as a valuable national security asset, has long raised concerns among civil rights advocates due to its sweeping nature and potential for misuse.
